The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is taking a new direction with its latest film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Director Matt Shukman has confirmed that the film will take place in a separate universe, where there will be no other superheroes besides the Fantastic Four.

Despite the presence of many popular characters in the Marvel Multiverse for over sixty years, the film will stand alone and provide a unique story independent of the rest of the MCU. This approach will allow the Fantastic Four to be introduced in a fresh perspective, giving fans an unexpected experience.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Matt Shukman explained the uniqueness of the film. “We are in our own universe, which is amazing and liberating. There are no other superheroes, no Easter eggs, no Iron Man or anything like that,” he said.

The Fantastic Four are the only focal point in this universe, and their adventures revolve entirely around them. The film will be part of Phase 6 of the MCU, but it will not immediately connect with the Avengers or other major characters, but will create its own path.

The film’s narrative focuses on establishing the Fantastic Four as a standalone team. They will be the only heroes in their own universe, which will give the director the opportunity to explore their characters and relationships in depth.

“I love the interconnected Marvel Universe, but here we can do something very new and different,” Shukman said. This independence not only makes Fantastic Four: First Steps a unique experience, but also lays a new foundation for the franchise.

However, this universe will never be alone. As Shukman revealed, “Eventually, this world will connect with other worlds.” This connection will take place in Avengers: Doomsday, where Robert Downey Jr. will appear as the MCU’s multiversal villain as Doctor Doom.

Until then, Fantastic Four: First Steps will remain its own “little corner,” offering fans a standalone but connected story in the future. This bold experiment for the MCU will not only introduce the Fantastic Four to a new generation, but also expand the boundaries of the multiverse.
