You must have heard that Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's "Thug Life" came to the theatres to create a stir. But on the fifth day, the first Monday, everyone was shocked to see the collections of this film. The first four days went well, but on the fifth day, the film earned only around 2.3 to 3.5 crores in India.

You must be wondering what is the matter? A superstar like Kamal Haasan, a master director like Mani Ratnam, and yet the film had to face a drop of 40-45% on the first Monday. Some people are saying that the story did not have the strength to keep the audience engaged. On top of that, "Thug Life" seems to be far away from the benchmark set by Kamal's films like "Vikram" or "Indian 2".

Now look at the total collections. "Thug Life" collected around Rs 39-40 crores in India in five days. It sounds fine, but this figure is nothing special for such a big budget film. The film also grossed around Rs 60-62 crores worldwide, but still it is behind films like "Good Bad Ugly". Distributors are sweating, as the series of losses is increasing.
There is less crowd in the theatres on Monday anyway, but the fall in the collection of "Thug Life" was surprising. After earning 6-7 crores on the fourth day, it settled at 2.3-3.5 crores on the fifth day. Not only this, some reports are saying that it earned only a part of the earnings of "Housefull 5". Now it is clear that the audience is more attracted towards other films.
Still, "Thug Life" has left its mark in some places. Tamil cinema fans showed a lot of enthusiasm in the beginning, but now that enthusiasm seems to be cooling down. Some people are even calling it Kamal Haasan's biggest flop till date. But, on the other hand, some fans feel that Kamal's acting and Mani Ratnam's vision can still do something amazing.
In the end, one thing has to be accepted that box office numbers are not everything. Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan tried something new in "Thug Life", even if it did not go down well with the audience. If you are still planning to watch it, go to the theatre and watch it. Who knows, you might find something in it that is more valuable than these numbers.
