Director Shawn Levy and actor Ryan Gosling officially announced the new Star Wars movie, Starfighter, at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan. The film will hit theaters on May 28, 2027, five years after 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. The film, which is set to begin production this fall, will be a standalone story for Lucasfilm.
Levy described Starfighter as a new adventure, not a prequel or sequel. "There's a lot of rumors, some of which are true, some of which are not. It's a new adventure," he said. The project, which Jonathan Tropper has been writing for two years, is set outside the Luke Skywalker core canon. Although Disney’s Lucasfilm is developing other Star Wars projects with James Mangold and Simon Kinberg, Levy’s film is said to be moving forward quickly.
Ryan Gosling praised Starfighter as “a great story with great, real characters.” “It’s such a heartwarming, adventurous film,” he said. Of Levy, he added, “There’s no better filmmaker for this particular story than Sean.” Gosling’s words add to the excitement for the film.
Levy is a filmmaker who made $1.33 billion for Disney with Deadpool & Wolverine, which became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. The success has made him a cornerstone filmmaker for Disney. Starfighter will be the second Star Wars film to hit the big screen, following The Mandalorian and Grog, which is due out next year.

After The Rise of Skywalker grossed $1.077 billion, Starfighter is set to offer fans a new experience. Among Lucasfilm’s other projects, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is also directing a Rey-led film that will see Daisy Ridley return. But the announcement of Starfighter has created a lot of excitement among fans.
Starfighter, which combines Levy’s directing skills with Gosling’s acting talent, is expected to be a new chapter in the Star Wars universe. Fans are eagerly awaiting its 2027 release.
